Hello, food lovers! Summer has been a whirlwind of culinary adventures, and I’ve got a special review for you today. Recently, I ventured to the much-talked-about Market at 70 King St in Oshawa. Though I missed their soft launch in July, I finally had the chance to experience this unique food destination firsthand, steering clear of any online reviews to savour my own first impressions.
Market at 70 King offers a distinctive twist on the traditional food court concept, blending it with the ambiance of a gourmet food hall. From the moment you set eyes on its impressive exterior, its inviting allure draws you in. Inside, the lively atmosphere and friendly faces create an energetic buzz that’s infectious. I arrived just before the lunch rush, and trust me, the buzz turned into a delightful bustle—this place is undoubtedly here to make its mark!
Eager to explore, I started my culinary journey with Sushi Again!, one of the first spots that caught my eye. Watching the sushi chefs masterfully craft their creations made it impossible to resist sampling more than a couple of rolls. I indulged in three, starting with the Spicy Tuna Roll. Each bite was a testament to freshness—pure, melt-in-your-mouth perfection that set the bar high for the rest of my meal.
Next on my culinary tour was the Philly Roll, packed with creamy avocado, rich cream cheese, and succulent salmon. The freshness was outstanding, making it a fantastic choice for a satisfying lunch. My final sushi indulgence was the Dynamite Roll, a personal favourite brimming with crisp shrimp tempura, avocado, and cream cheese. Each roll was a home run—freshly crafted and bursting with flavour, leaving me pleasantly surprised with every bite.
My exploration didn’t stop there. I ventured over to Bao Mama, a haven for bao bun enthusiasts. Until now, I had never tried a bao bun—a popular treat in Taiwan, Singapore, and the Philippines. These fluffy cousins to dumplings are crafted from flour, yeast, sugar, baking powder, milk, and oil, offering a slightly sweet, cloud-like experience. Bao Mama boasts an impressive selection, and I started with the Triple B. This bao bun was generously stuffed with slow-cooked, perfectly seasoned braised beef brisket, topped with crispy onions that added an irresistible crunch to every bite.
Continuing, I opted for the Pnoy Chick Bao, a bun filled with perfectly tender BBQ chicken, topped with aioli, vibrant slaw, and their signature in-house adobo sauce. Each bite was a burst of freshness, with flavours melding together beautifully. I also tried the Crispiest Pork Pata, featuring a deep-fried pork hock topped with garlic aioli, Asian slaw, savoury sauce, fresh green onions, and crispy pork skins. Each mouthful was simply heavenly!
To round off my bao experience, I savoured the O.G.C—the Original Crispy Chicken. This bao was complemented with hoisin sauce and a hint of sriracha mayo, adding a smooth, appreciated kick to an already amazing bun. Each bao offered unique, fresh flavors, making it even more delightful knowing that everything is crafted and baked on-site. The incredible staff contributed to the experience, as their passion shone through in every delicious bite, allowing you to taste the diverse textures and flavours seamlessly intertwined in each creation.
My culinary tour ended with a visit to ZAPS Polish Street Food. Though I’m typically not a fan of schnitzel and was already quite full, I decided to give their offering a try. I ordered a generously sized schnitzel on a fresh bun, topped with sauerkraut. From the first bite, I was hooked—the schnitzel was perfectly cooked and juicy, and the sauerkraut was fresh, with just the right amount of seasoning. Each bite seemed better than the last, and before I knew it, my plate was clean!
I highly recommend visiting these three fantastic spots, along with the other great restaurants at 70 King St E. Just make sure you arrive with an appetite—there’s so much deliciousness to discover!
